The land of magnificent temples...this is the town of Kolhapur, the religious pride of Maharashtra. Nestled in the tranquil laps of the Sahyadri mountain ranges, it is situated on the verge of the river Panchganga. Surrounded by rivers from all directions with Krishna Ganiki to the east, Shiva and Mayuri to the west, Veda and Yaksha to the south and to the north, Krishna and Warana, this part of terra firma houses a plethora of fascinating temples. It is believed to be a milk-rich area and the hill-side weather conditions are believed to be beneficial for bodybuilders. Winters are mild and misty and the people remain enthusiastic. Also termed as a city of palaces and gardens, it is a historic Maratha city, with the Mahalakshmi temple forming the focus.
Goddess Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) of Kolhapur is found in almost every Maharashtrian household. Pioneer social reformer, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, ruled with the object of uplifting the downtrodden
Agriculture is the main source of livelihood to 9,28,265 persons including self-supporting persons, both earning and non-earning. The people of Kolhapur speak Marathi and Hindi.
Since all JNVs are run by the same organization (i.e., Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti), there is no difference in the management structure of the JNVs throughout the country. JNV Kolhapur is covered under Pune region, which is looked after by a Deputy Commissioner. JNV Kolhapur is the the cluster school for the adjacent JNVs. At the school level, there is a Vidyalaya Management Committee ad the District Magistrate is the chairman. The role of VMC remains at the periphery and they primarily help in solving local problems.
